Part 61: This Side Of Paradise

Of course not. Most of these islands support less than a dozen people. There is basically no infrastructure, even boats seem rare. No grocery stores, no trade at all, they survive off fruit trees and maybe fishing. Most of the people and animals we've seen are doomed to die childless. This is a dying world, we're just providing a little palliative care.
It's true. ... let's provide some more!
After a quick change of clothes, Sam leaves the elves panicking about their goddamned invisible doors and heads out. Aw, his hair's getting long.
To Cutopia we go!
: What's the cutest thing you've ever seen, Lyndsay?
: Once, Marlon conjured up a basket of kittens on my birthday. They were adorable! What's the cutest thing you've ever seen?
: Oh, that's easy, pal: Guillermo!
: Hmmm...
Hmm indeed. Once again Sam wisely stays out of the conversation, and soon enough we dock at Cutopia!
Sam and Co. disembark and see these two ladies chatting.
Shortly thereafter the one dressed in black takes her leave. Let's go meet the other one!
hi hello
Sam and Buddy both beam and wave.
: Hello, Poppy. I'm Lyndsay, and these are my friends Sam and Buddy.
: Oh! Um, thanks!
Poppy turns to Buddy and starts giggling.
: Hee hee! I like your hat! It's funny.
: Why, thank you, Poppy! I like your hat, too!
: Buddy, she's not wearing a hat.
: She probably has one at home.
Welp, Buddy's found his soulmate.
: ANYway... Poppy, who were you talking to just now? I thought I saw someone as we docked our ship.
Poppy goes all bashful.
: Oh, um... her. Well... actually, that was my sister, Violet.
: Why'd she run off like that?
: Well, you see that castle over there? That's where Duchess Beverly lives.
More royalty!
Oh no!
: Oh, that's sad.
: I don't get to see Violet very much any more...
Poppy cheers back up.
: But my friend Daniel lives in the castle! The Duchess is his mom. Sometimes she lets us play, but probably not today.
: Why not?
: I don't know. There's been a lot of commotion around the castle today. Daniel hasn't come to visit at all.
: Hey, Sam, should we go to the castle and see if we can help?
Sam nods to Buddy.
: Alright, then. Thank you, Poppy. It was very nice to meet you.
: Bye, Lyndsay! Bye, Buddy! Nice to meet you, Sam! Come by and say hi sometime, okay?
Sam waves goodbye and Poppy runs off, full of energy.
Let's head to the castle and see what's up.
: I know. Sorry, Mom.
: And just look at our castle! Sure, it's cute--but is it 'National Cutopia Awareness Day' cute?
: Well, I-I guess it could always be cuter...
The Duchess turns around and spots us.
: Oh no! The guests are here! But... but it's customary to have the festival decorations prepared before visitors arrive!
: Oh, excuse me. I didn't realize you were in service to the Royal Family.
: Well, I wouldn't say 'service', exactly--
: Servants! I hereby decree that you are to help Lord Daniel prepare the National Cutopia Awareness Day Festival.
... excuse me?
I am never going to complain about Zack again.
: Help me conduct an inspection of the festival grounds!
The two of them leave--Spencer has a mighty fine strut going on--and leave us with the unhappy Daniel.
: I'm sorry, Wandolier. I'm afraid my mom isn't going to relax until the festival is ready.
He cheers up a bit.
: I'll give you a scroll that'll help you decorate the castle grounds for the festival. My mom's pretty particular, but I'm sure you noticed that already.
Lo! A Scroll!
We can handle this. But first...
... Sam is going to pry open this clam.
Because there's a figure of Buddy inside, and don't ask me how Sam knew.
That done, though, Sam returns to the boat. It's obvious that his current outfit is not classy enough for Cutopia.
There. He'll fit in much better now.
Sam goes to take a look around the island. This must be Poppy's place.
This must be a chest!
This must be a new Scroll! However, we won't be able to complete this Scroll right now, as Sam does not yet have a reliable source of Pencil Essences. (Okay, yes, technically I could make him browse some bookshelves all day, but I would go mad with boredom long before he collected eighteen Pencils.)
The trees are Cherry Blossoms. Not a huge surprise.
There's some kind of gate back behind the castle.
One fishing spot...
One mining wall.
A pond full of treasure-filled clams! That black sphere near Sam's middle is actually a Dark Pearl, ooooh.
This one just has Bronze and Simoleons to go with its Mana.
This one contains Diamonds. Gray ones, apparently. Still: wow.
Right. Let's get to work.
